Our Suffolk Cottage Garden: 2009

My then partner, Kevin (now my husband) and I moved into our Suffolk cottage, which dates back to the 16th century, in 2009. It was October and the first thing we knew we had to address was that the main private garden, at the rear of the cottage, did not have a complete fence. This would have to be resolved, for we had a beautiful dog, called Fred, who would run off into the 120 acres of land adjacent to us, without a full fence in place.

As you will note from the photos, there really was no garden at all! It was unfenced meadow. There was a bush or two against the cottage but otherwise it was simply an open space, with meadow grass.

There was little we could do, at this point, however, for winter was soon upon us and the cold seasons hit with a force. We experienced a heavy winter of snow, in that year. This was not something we were unaccustomed to, for we had lived in Suffolk since 2007, but the timing of a house move late in the year was not necessarily easy or helpful.
